Wisdom Tooth Removal and Recovery

The removal of wisdom teeth is very common, wisdom teeth are the last teeth to come through usually in your late teens or early twenties. Because of this there often isn’t enough room for the teeth to come through properly. When this happens it is known as being impacted. This isn’t usually enough for wisdom teeth extraction however if they are causing you pain you should speak to your dentist. Don’t wait for your routine appointment, seek help as soon as possible and your dentist will offer an x-ray to better gauge the extent of the problem and determine whether removal is necessary. If you are experiencing pain it may be that food and or bacteria are getting stuck in any gaps or around the gum line where the wisdom tooth has broken through. This can cause a buildup of plaque which can in turn lead to  Cavities  Gingivitis  Periodontitis  Cellulitis  Abscesses  Chats or benign growths  Most problems can be cleared up with a good oral hygiene routine and if necessary a course of antibiotics. If this doesn’t work then removal may be recommended. The procedure should be explained to you and not usually carried out without your consent. A local anesthetic is given to numb the area and you will feel pressure but no pain as the tooth is removed. Sometimes a small cut may be made to remove the tooth more easily or the tooth itself may be broken up and removed in small pieces. How long the procedure takes depends on each individual case.  If local anesthetic was used you can drive yourself home but it is still recommended that you take a day or two off work. If sedatives are used you should wait at least 24 hours before driving yourself anywhere. You may have some visible bruising after, swelling and discomfort but it doesn’t usually last for more than two weeks. But if you have any concerns you should speak to your dentist.  As with any surgery, wisdom tooth removal can pose some possible risks. Infection, delayed healing and ‘dry socket’ are some potential side effects. Follow your aftercare instructions to minimise risk. You can also aid your recovery by: Using painkillers, always read and follow the dosage instructions Avoid overdoing it, no exercise and try not to talk too much.  Try using an extra soft pillow at night  For 24 hours avoid hot drinks and brushing that area. You don’t want to dislodge any blood clots forming in the empty socket. They help the healing process.  Gently rinse the extraction site with antiseptic mouthwash after 24 hours, and repeat this regularly over the next few days, particularly after eating – you can also use warm water with a teaspoon of salt as mouthwash to reduce gum soreness and inflammation. Make sure you finish any course of antibiotics and things should settle down within a couple of weeks. Schedule a follow up appointment for a week or two after the procedure. Any stitches will likely be removed at this appointment.

What to Expect for Wisdom Teeth Removal

If you have been experiencing pain at the back of your mouth, it’s possible that there is an issue with a wisdom tooth. Many people don’t know that there is a skin flap here where food can get trapped. If left to fester then it’s possible for this to lead to an infection. There are other complications that wisdom teeth can cause as well. When this happens, your dentist in Heber, Utah will schedule a wisdom tooth removal. Here is what to expect from this treatment.    When Do They Need Taken Out    Wisdom teeth may need removing if they have either been impacted or ruptured. This may occur due to the position that they take in your mouth. They can get trapped against the jawbone and gums which can lead to a painful situation. Your dentist will keep a check on wisdom teeth coming in by taking regular x-rays of your mouth. It’s also possible that wisdom teeth come in at the wrong angle. This means that they will press on other teeth and cause issues here. Or perhaps, you have an issue with there being not enough space for the new teeth coming in. Regardless of the scenario, this will typically lead to wisdom teeth removal.    What Happens Before The Surgery?   Before the surgery, you will be taken through a standard and routine process with your dentist. They will inquire about any existing health issues that you may have that could impact the treatment. They will also want to know whether you are taking any drugs on a regular basis. You will be given the chance to ask any questions that you may have and you will be given a choice for the surgery itself. For instance, you can opt to either be awake for the procedure or be numbed. Be aware that being numb is the safer option.    What Happens During The Wisdom Teeth Removal?   During the wisdom teeth removal, you will either be numb or asleep for the procedure. Not every dentist offers the option for you to be put under completely. If you are asleep you will wake up once the surgery is finished. If you are only under local anesthesia you will be awake for the entire treatment, however, you won’t feel anything due to an injection of Novocaine into your gums. Nitrous oxide can also be used to provide the same effect.    In some cases, stitches will be needed for this treatment. This will be the case if the dentist needs to cut through the bone to gain access to the wisdom tooth.    What To Expect After Treatment?   You will heal from this treatment relatively quickly with most people passing through a full recovery in about three days at most. You may, however, need a little longer for your mouth to recover. Minor swelling is quite common as is pain that lingers for a little while. There are lots of options for treating this pain or discomfort, including an ice pack or moist heat. While you can eat, it’s best to focus on foods that are soft such as pasta and soup.    Your dentist in Utah will make sure that you are provided the necessary drugs and treatment options that you require.   Schedule an appointment today, or give us a call!
